Getting Out of The City

Hi All,

It was an absolutely beautiful day in Dublin today so I decided to get out of the city and went to a beautiful part of the countryside, Glendalough, Co Wicklow.

The name Glendalough originated from the Irish name Gleann Da Loch, which translates to ‘the valley of the two lakes. For thousands of years, people have been drawn to Glendalough for its spectacular scenery, rich history, archaeology and abundant wildlife. It is a remarkable place that will still your mind, inspire your heart and fill your soul. The sheer beauty and tranquility would take your breath away!

Glendalough

‘Glendalough is home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland. This early Christian monastic settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and from this developed the ‘Monastic City’. The ‘City’ consists of a number of monastic remains, and the most impressive being the Round Tower which stands 30m high. The main group of monastic buildings lie downstream near the Round Tower’.

And of course I brought along a picnic. Lots of water so as not to get dehydrated, a lovely freshly made wholegrain sourdough baguette, lettuce, tomato, spring onion, pepper & herb cheese, red pepper, wholegrain mustard…..all assembled sitting under the glorious sunshine! And for desert, organic green grapes (a substitute for the wine!!!) and a lovely juicy apple.

Now, I have to admit, I did have a treat!! Here in Ireland, when the sun comes out ( which isn’t too often ) we love to cool down with an ice-cream. And our favourite ice-cream is something we call a ’99’. It is a wafer in the shape of a cone, topped with ice-cream, raspberry syrup drizzled 99over it and a chocolate flake stuck into the ice-cream…. deeelicious!! The way I see things, if I want a treat once in a while its ok to have it and enjoy it and then the following day I get back onto my healthy track again. I don’t do it very often, but, come on!!! a ’99’ with a chocolate flake on a hot sunny day!! Its a must!!

So anybody looking for somewhere nice to go on a sunny day, try Glendalough, its spectacular.!

Here’s to more sunny days
